Protoplasm

The word "protoplasm' comes from the Greek "protos" for first, and plasma for thing formed . The term was first given to us by J.E. Purkinje for the material of the animal embryo.

The term protoplasm was proposed in the year 1835 and is known as the primary substance, as it is responsible for various living processes.

 All the components of a cell including cell membrane is known as ' protoplasm'. It is colourless, jelly like, viscous semi fluid substance which can be distinguished into a centrally located nucleoplasm and the surrounding cytoplasm.

It was believed that cell were containers of protoplasm. However, the concept could not explain the origin of structures formed within the cell, primarily the nucleus.

                            

Function :-

Protoplasm is site of all the essential procedures of life. The processes  like transport of gases, formation of different components of the cell, breakdown of food material for release of energy, cell division etc. are performed which in the Protoplasm.
